The MTV VMAs red carpet is nothing if not entertaining. You can pretty much always count on a little bit of nudity, a sampling the swaggiest designer gear (in 2017, that’s mostly Gucci), and some very entertaining posturing and posing in order to best display the goods (or lack thereof). There were a few style moments that set this year apart, however. Cropped pants were a somewhat surprising choice on the red carpet with everyone from Lil Yachty to Machine Gun Kelly flashing ankle. Jared Leto wore a sequined cape. And guys seemed to ditch the leather jacket as the ubiqoutous “I’m a badass” staple in favor of printed button-down shirts and bold-color knits. It was…refreshing. Here, every flex that caught our attention, in all its rebel glory.

DJ Khaled and Chance the Rapper went bold and bright, the latter in Kenzo the former in…well, do we really need to tell you?
Excellent use of the ’70s graphic ringer T-shirt, man.
Billy Joel in a Billy Idol world.
Why don’t we…pump the breaks on all of this.
