When you want to stand out in a crowd, especially at an event like NBA Awards where guys are trying to out-dress one another, you have to break away from the traditional black suit or tuxedo path. You could go bold in a brightly colored suit. You could opt for graphic patterned tailoring that elevates everything you wear underneath it. You could do both and cement yourself as a DGAF menswear legend on the make. Or, you could do what Drake did last night and turn heads by embracing the most classic form of formalwear.
Dressed in head-to-toe Tom Ford—the undisputed G.O.A.T. of formalwear—Drake arrived in a white satin tuxedo jacket paired with classic black tuxedo pants and patent leather lace-ups. Looking like the 2017 reincarnation of a throwback (like golden age of cinema throwback) leading man, the rapper’s outfit was exactly what you want from fashion: an ensemble so on point, you notice the wearer more than you notice the clothes. And in true Drake form his grooming was perfectly trimmed up. No one should be surprised that a Gatsby-ed-out Drake out-fitted everyone last night, the guy has a leg up on even the most stylish NBA players at an awards show designed for them.
Could Drake be accused of being overdressed for the first-ever awards dedicated to pro ball? Maybe. Then again, it’s always better to be over-dressed and sharp-as-hell than underdressed or sloppy. If you’re checking account isn’t stocked with the requisite commas to pick up a Ford tux like this, at least remember that bit of free sartorial advice.
